If the BCS goes to a “plus one” system will that be good enough for you?

i.e. if they have the highest two ranked teams to win the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta Bowls then face off for a Championship “plus one.”
I think it would be a major improvement, and I think at least they’d consider that.

A plus one system would mean we’d be treated to another college football game with two great teams participating, but it wouldn’t go very far in satisfying the playoff wantees, of which I’m one. There are several reasons, the #3 is the most important in my opinion.

1) If you used the BCS system to rank the teams after the bowls to decide who makes it to the Plus-One game, why would you pit #1 and #2 against each other for a bowl game?

2) Teams like Boise State and Utah this year would have little chance of being selected for a Plus-One game because the BCS voters would still have a bias against teams from the mid-major conferences.

3) Going to a Plus-One system would deter the chances of ever getting a true playoff system in place for another 5 years or more.

Some of the many playoff scenarios proposed over the years have included the bowl games as part of the process. Some have suggested having the top 8 teams meet in the 4 big bowl games and then have two more weeks of games to determine the eventual champion. The bowl games would basically become quarter-finals for a playoff system.

Other proposals have suggested picking two of the bowl games, perhaps on a rotating basis, to be the national semi-final games and placing the top 4 teams in them. Then a NC game could be held a week or so later.

All those proposals have been rejected or not even considered because the big dollar bowl games don’t want them. It would screw up the traditional conference tie ins, and it would diminish the importance of their bowl game products. They want their games to be the final shows of the year, and every 4 years, they each can have the NC game in their house.
