when framing, what are mat boards and what do you have to consider when choosing them?

also, when framing a poster normally,(no space in between the posters edges and the inside edge of the frame) does the frame overlap the picture a little bit or is it right on the exact edge of the poster so you could still see 100% of the whole edge of the poster?

Mat board is the paper board material that mats are cut from. Crescent board is one brand. Its available in dozens of colors and a few textures.

A mat is the ‘border’ between the visible edge of the piece being framed, and the frame itself. The inside edge is often beveled (cut on 45 degree angle)

As for framing posters: its my understanding that when framed, the visible part of the poster is slightly less than the poster itself (so yes, the frame and poster overlap slightly). This makes it easier to frame.
