can a scanned document officially be used as proof of the original?

is a scan of an original document OFFICIAL proof of the existence of the original? for example a scan of my passport..is it accepted?

Companies around the world are having archive departments and their job is to archive documents by scanning. Its mainly for keeping documents storage space at minimal at offices. Physical docs shifted to banks or warehouses and the scanned copies in servers for easy reference.
But as far as acceptance of scanned copy like your passport is concerned. No dear it is not accepted and cannot be equivalent to your original copy.
