In baseball how many extra innings are allowed?

In baseball if there is a tie after 9 innings there is extra innings. How many extra innings are allowed? Also why is it that in professional baseball its so much harder to get runs than little league. In profession most of the time the batter is out and theres hardly any score most games unless the defense makes errors.
Is there no limit to how many extra innings there are. And why is it that if the batter is up and he keeps hitting foul balls, why is there no limit to how many fouls he could hit. The batter could hit a million fouls and still be up. Why is that?

Major League Baseball sanctions no limit to how many innings a game may play. There are some time limits — curfews — imposed based upon various circumstances and local ordinances, but these rarely take effect.

The longest major league game, by innings, was in 1920 between the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers). Final score, 1-1 tie, called on account of darkness — after 26 innings.

More recently, the White Sox and Brewers played 25 innings in 1984 — a game which did run up against the curfew, as the rules were a bit different back then (suspended at the end of the 17th) — and was played to completion the next day. Chicago won it on a home run by Harold Baines. Note the three HOF pitchers involved — Sutton was one of the starters, Fingers blew the save opp, and Seaver finished it for the home team and got the W.
