How do i hook up xbox live with a wirless router ethernet cable and the xbox?

ok i have a wireless router and i hooked it up to my xbox with the cable but when i test the connection it always stops at the internet connection part what am i supposed 2 do to hook it up?
do i need a wireless network adapter 2 hook it up if i have a wireless router?
